Air conditioning has transformed life in Florida and across the American South. Here's a quick look at how we got here.
The modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Carrier, an engineer who designed a system to control humidity in a Brooklyn printing plant. His invention regulated both temperature and humidity, and the principles he established are still used today.
Room air conditioners became available for residential use in the 1930s, though they were expensive and rare. After World War II, production scaled up dramatically, and window units became common in American homes through the 1950s and 60s.
Central air conditioning transformed home design in the 1960s and 70s. Homes no longer needed to be built with natural ventilation as a primary concern, and the American Sun Belt — including Florida — became far more accessible as a year-round destination and home for millions of people.
Today's systems are dramatically more efficient than early models. SEER ratings, variable-speed compressors, and smart thermostat integration have made modern AC both more effective and less expensive to run than anything available even 15 years ago.
