Ductless Mini-Split A/C vs. Central Air Conditioning

Two of the most popular cooling options for Florida homes are ductless mini-splits and central air conditioning. Here’s how they compare.

Central Air Conditioning

Central AC distributes conditioned air through ductwork throughout your home. It’s the most common system in Florida and is ideal for cooling an entire home evenly. It requires existing ductwork or the installation of new ducts.

Ductless Mini-Split

Mini-splits deliver conditioned air directly to one or more zones without ductwork. They’re ideal for additions, rooms without duct access, garages, or older homes without existing ductwork. Each zone is controlled independently for personalized comfort.

Efficiency

Both can be highly efficient. Mini-splits eliminate duct losses (which can account for 20-30% of energy waste). Central systems with properly sealed ducts can also be very efficient.

Cost

Central AC has lower cost-per-ton for whole-home cooling. Mini-splits are more cost-effective for targeted zoning or spaces where running ductwork isn’t practical.
