Haunting Hazards! The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating for Halloween

Halloween decorations are fun, but some can create real safety hazards in your home. Here are some electrical and fire safety tips to keep your haunted house truly safe.

DO: Use LED Lights

LED Halloween lights run cooler than incandescent bulbs, reducing fire risk. They also use less energy and last longer through the season.

DO: Check Extension Cord Ratings

Use outdoor-rated extension cords for exterior decorations. Never overload a single outlet with multiple decorations.

DON’T: Leave Candles and Jack-o-Lanterns Unattended

Open flames are the leading cause of Halloween fires. Use battery-operated candles inside pumpkins for a safe, flicker-free glow.

DON’T: Block Emergency Exits

Decorations should never block doorways, stairways, or windows that serve as emergency exits.

DON’T: Overload Circuits

Too many decorations on one circuit can trip breakers or cause wiring to overheat. If your breakers are tripping frequently, contact Air & Energy at 941-778-0773 for an electrical inspection.
