A clogged AC drain line is one of the most common causes of water damage from air conditioning systems. Here's how to prevent it.
Your air conditioner removes humidity from the air as it cools your home. That moisture collects in a drain pan and exits through a condensate drain line, typically a PVC pipe that drains outside or into a utility drain. Over time, algae, mold, and debris can clog this line.
Water around your indoor air handler, musty smells near the unit, or your system shutting off unexpectedly (due to a float switch triggered by a full drain pan) all indicate a clogged line.
Locate the access point on the drain line (usually a T-shaped cap near your air handler). Pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the line and let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with water. Do this monthly to prevent buildup. For stubborn clogs, a wet/dry vacuum on the exterior outlet can pull out the blockage.
Monthly vinegar treatments and annual professional maintenance are the best ways to keep drain lines clear. Air & Energy checks and clears drain lines as part of every maintenance visit. Call (941) 778-0773 or schedule an AC tune-up online. License #CAC1817161.
