How to Clean an AC Drain Line

How to Clean an AC Drain Line

Blog

A clogged AC drain line is one of the most common causes of water damage from air conditioning systems. Here's how to prevent it.

What Is the Drain Line?

Your air conditioner removes humidity from the air as it cools your home. That moisture collects in a drain pan and exits through a condensate drain line, typically a PVC pipe that drains outside or into a utility drain. Over time, algae, mold, and debris can clog this line.

Signs of a Clogged Drain Line

Water around your indoor air handler, musty smells near the unit, or your system shutting off unexpectedly (due to a float switch triggered by a full drain pan) all indicate a clogged line.

How to Clear It

Locate the access point on the drain line (usually a T-shaped cap near your air handler). Pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the line and let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with water. Do this monthly to prevent buildup. For stubborn clogs, a wet/dry vacuum on the exterior outlet can pull out the blockage.
