How to Clean an AC Drain Line

A clogged AC drain line is one of the most common causes of air conditioner problems in Florida. The good news: it’s easy to prevent with a little routine maintenance.

Why Drain Lines Clog

Your AC removes humidity from the air, and that moisture drains through the condensate drain line. Over time, algae, mold, and debris can build up inside the line and cause a clog. A clogged drain line can trigger your AC’s safety shutoff, cause water to back up into the system, or lead to water damage around the air handler.

How to Clean It

  1. Locate the drain line access point (usually a white PVC pipe with a cap near your indoor air handler).
  2. Remove the cap and pour one cup of white vinegar or a 50/50 bleach-and-water mixture into the line.
  3. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with water.
  4. Repeat monthly as a preventive measure.

When to Call a Professional

If your AC is shutting off unexpectedly, you see water around the air handler, or the vinegar flush doesn’t resolve the issue, call Air & Energy at 941-778-0773 for professional drain line cleaning and AC service.
