How to Clean an AC Drain Line

Being on a semi-annual maintenance plan is one of the best ways to keep your air conditioning system healthy. But in between visits, there are things you can do yourself — like cleaning your AC drain line.

Why Does the Drain Line Need Cleaning?

Your AC removes humidity from the air. That moisture drains through the condensate drain line. In Florida’s heat and humidity, algae and mold can build up inside the line and cause clogs. A clogged drain line can cause water damage, system shutdowns, and mold growth.

How to Clean It

1. Locate the drain line access port (usually a T-shaped PVC pipe near the air handler).
2. Pour 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar or diluted bleach into the line.
3. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with clean water.
4. Repeat monthly during peak cooling season.
