Types of Electrical Outlets

Not all electrical outlets are the same. Understanding the different types in your home helps you know what’s safe, what’s up to code, and when you might need an upgrade.

Standard 15-Amp Outlets

The most common outlet type in homes, rated for 15-amp circuits. Used for lights, lamps, and smaller electronics.

20-Amp Outlets

Identifiable by a small T-shaped slot, these are required for high-draw appliances like microwaves and refrigerators.

GFCI Outlets

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets have test and reset buttons and are required in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors. They protect against electrocution.

AFCI Outlets and Breakers

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters protect against electrical fires caused by arcing. They’re now required in most living areas under current code.

USB Outlets

Modern outlets with built-in USB charging ports are convenient and increasingly popular. Air & Energy handles all types of electrical outlet installation and upgrades. Call 941-778-0773.
