If you’ve been following HVAC news, you may have heard about the R-410A refrigerant phase-out. Here’s what Bradenton homeowners need to know.
R-410A is the refrigerant used in most residential air conditioners manufactured since the early 2000s. It replaced R-22 (Freon), which was phased out due to its impact on the ozone layer.
R-410A has a high global warming potential (GWP). Under EPA regulations aligned with the AIM Act, production and import of R-410A is being reduced, with a full transition to lower-GWP refrigerants underway.
The primary replacement is R-454B, which has significantly lower GWP and is used in new AC systems manufactured after January 1, 2025. New systems are specifically designed for R-454B and cannot use R-410A.
If your current AC uses R-410A and it’s working fine, you don’t need to rush to replace it. But as the refrigerant becomes less available, recharge costs will increase. When it’s time for a new system, you’ll be getting the newer, more environmentally friendly refrigerant standard. Call Air & Energy at 941-778-0773 with any questions.
