The phase-out of R-410A refrigerant is an important step in protecting the environment. Here’s what it means for homeowners and HVAC users.
R-410A has been the standard refrigerant in residential air conditioners for the past two decades. While it doesn’t deplete the ozone layer like older refrigerants, it is a potent greenhouse gas.
As part of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the U.S. EPA is phasing out high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants like R-410A. The transition to lower-GWP alternatives is already underway.
New AC systems manufactured after January 1, 2025 use R-454B (marketed as Puron Advance), which has a significantly lower global warming potential than R-410A.
If you have an existing R-410A system, it will still be serviceable for years to come. But when it’s time to replace your system, the new unit will use R-454B. Contact Air & Energy at 941-778-0773 with any questions about refrigerant and your AC system.
