Turning on the tap to find cloudy or milky water can be unsettling. The good news: most causes of cloudy water are harmless. Here’s what’s usually behind it.
The most common cause of cloudy tap water is dissolved air. When water is under pressure in pipes and that pressure drops when it comes out of the tap, tiny air bubbles form and make the water look milky. If you let a glass of cloudy water sit for a minute or two and it clears from the bottom up, it’s just air — harmless.
In areas with hard water (like Manatee County), minerals like calcium and magnesium can create a cloudy appearance, especially in hot water. A water softener or filtration system can address this.
If cloudiness doesn’t clear and appears consistently, it may indicate sediment in the water supply or a water heater that needs service.
