What Causes Cloudy Water?

Cloudy or milky tap water is a common concern for homeowners. In most cases, the cause is harmless — but sometimes it signals a problem worth addressing.

Trapped Air

The most common cause of cloudy water is tiny air bubbles. This is especially common after plumbing work or when water pressure changes. Let a glass of water sit for a minute — if it clears from the bottom up, air bubbles are the cause.

Hard Water Minerals

High levels of calcium and magnesium can cause cloudiness and leave deposits on fixtures. A water softener addresses this.

Sediment

Sediment from pipes or the water main can cause cloudy water. This may be accompanied by a gritty feel or off taste.

When to Be Concerned

If the cloudiness doesn’t clear or comes with an odor, contact your water utility and consider water testing. Call Air & Energy at 941-778-0773 to discuss water filtration options.
